About hCG
Human chorionic gonadotropin, better known as hCG, is the hormone the placenta produces early in pregnancy. What makes it so useful in research is that it closely resembles LH, the pituitary hormone that signals the testes and ovaries to produce sex hormones. hCG binds to the same receptor, so it can stand in for that signal.
